Step-by-step plan: How to maintain leather like a pro
-
Regular cleaning
After use: Wipe off dirt, sand, and sweat immediately with a soft, slightly damp cloth. This prevents dirt from penetrating the leather. -
Thorough cleaning
Once or twice a month (or with heavy use): Use a special saddle soap or mild leather cleaner. Apply with a soft sponge, working in circular motions.
Caution: Do not use aggressive cleaning agents or too much water! -
Air dry
Let leather dry at room temperature. Never near a heater, in the sun, or with a hairdryer, as this will dry out the leather and make it stiff. -
Grease and care
Treat your halter or bridle regularly with leather grease, leather balm, or oil. Apply a thin layer, let it absorb thoroughly, and remove any excess with a dry cloth.
This keeps the leather supple, shiny and water-repellent. -
Check regularly for damage
Check for loose stitching, tears, or hard spots. Repair minor damage immediately to prevent larger problems.
✨ Extra tips from the stable
-
Always hang your leather halter or bridle neatly in a dry, ventilated place.
-
Avoid using plastic bags or sealed containers – leather needs to be able to “breathe”.
